Father Bob Kus retires to Honduras, diocese appoints new priests

Wilmington’s Basilica Shrine of St. Mary’s hosted an extra special service Sunday for its parishioners, marking a significant moment as Father Bob Kus prepared for his retirement. The longtime priest, who has served the downtown Wilmington parish for 12 years, was widely beloved, particularly within the vibrant Hispanic community he actively nurtured. Parishioner Silvia Alba, a member for decades, expressed deep sadness, stating, “He has been so great with us… he loves the Hispanic community, he is always helpful and so kind.” She added, “We will miss him so much,” highlighting the community’s attachment to Kus and the considerable growth he oversaw.
Father Kus described his greatest joy as being with the people and the children, noting the lively and loving atmosphere of the parish. Under his leadership, the number of Masses increased significantly, alongside other major accomplishments. He successfully established a church health clinic, brought the financially struggling parish out of debt, and forged a relationship with a sister parish in Honduras, demonstrating a commitment to both community care and international connection.
The final service was a poignant farewell for many in the congregation. Hundreds gathered to witness Kus’s last trip to the altar, a touching moment symbolizing the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. The atmosphere was emotional, underscored by a surprise Mariachi band performance that deeply moved the retiring priest to tears. He reflected on his life, saying, “I love the people so much… it is hard to say goodbye, but it’s wonderful to say a whole new way of life.”
At 75, Father Kus acknowledged the expectation of retirement but emphasized his desire to continue serving. He declared, “I am not ready to stop being a priest.” His future path involves spreading the word of God in the rugged mountains of Honduras, reaching out to 50,000 parishioners across 87 chapels. This mission represents a new chapter focused on serving different communities and speaking a different language, yet rooted in the same dedication to faith and service.
Father Bob Kus’s legacy in Wilmington is one of growth, compassion, and steadfast service. His departure marks the end of a dedicated ministry but the start of a new calling in the mission fields of Honduras. The Diocese of Raleigh has appointed Reverend Ryszard Kolodziej of Shallotte and Reverend Francisco Garcia of Wake Forest to lead St. Mary’s Basilica moving forward.
