Brigadier General Elad Edri Leads Post-Earthquake Inspections in Venezuela

A significant Israeli military presence has arrived in Venezuela following the devastating June 24 earthquakes, marking a notable shift in the country’s geopolitical stance. This mission arrives days after the natural disasters struck, suggesting a potential role in post-disaster reconstruction planning, alongside Washington.
This development contrasts sharply with Venezuela’s previous position. Under President Hugo Chávez and his successor Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela maintained strong ties with the Israeli government and actively supported the Palestinian cause, repeatedly condemning Israel’s actions in the occupied territories. The severing of diplomatic relations in 2009 coincided with Chávez’s denunciation of Israel’s “Cast Lead” operation.
However, Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has taken a different path. She has publicly engaged with the Israeli team, which included multiple IDF officers, praising their professionalism and thanking them for their work. This engagement signals a possible reestablishment of closer ties between Venezuela and Israel.
One prominent figure in this Israeli mission is Brigadier General Elad Edri, Chief of Staff of the IDF Home Front Command. He presented a slideshow titled “Project for Future Reconstruction” during a July 7 meeting with Rodríguez. Edri’s background includes leading IDF missions in previous disasters, such as the 2015 Nepal earthquake, the 2017 Mexico earthquake, and the 2021 Champlain Towers South collapse in Florida.
Edri’s military career is also notable for his involvement in operations widely criticized internationally. He participated in the 2006 Israeli invasion of Lebanon and multiple operations in Gaza, including the devastating “Cast Lead” (2008-09) and “Protective Edge” (2014). The IDF Home Front Command, under his leadership, has been accused of playing an active role in ethnic cleansing and shielding settler colonies in the West Bank, actions fundamentally at odds with Venezuela’s past stance.
The presence of Edri and other Israeli officials raises questions about the motivations behind Venezuela’s welcoming stance. His recent activities include leading preparation efforts for the US-Israeli planned military action against Iran in February, further highlighting the strategic nature of the current mission. The geopolitical realignment in Venezuela, moving away from its previous condemnation of Israel, presents a complex picture for observers.
