Palestinian Christian leaders criticize US Christian Zionists for ignoring their realities

Palestinian Christian leaders voiced sharp criticism of American Christian Zionists, urging them to confront the tangible realities faced by Palestinian Christians living under Israeli occupation. In an interview with CNN, these leaders challenged the theological basis of Christian Zionism, which often centers on interpretations of biblical prophecy related to Israel and the end times.
Father Munther Isaac, director of the Bethlehem Institute for Peace and Justice, emphasized the need for American Christians to visit Palestinian communities and witness the situation firsthand. He stated, “Our experience has been when pastors and lay people come to Palestine, see the walls, see the settlements, meet with families struggling just to survive in their land – that’s when their eyes are opened.” Isaac contended that the Christian Zionists’ focus on prophecy distracts from the immediate suffering and displacement of Palestinian Christians.
Father Bashar Fawadleh of Taybeh echoed these concerns. Taybeh is the last fully Christian town in the West Bank, and its population is experiencing steady decline due to the ongoing conflict. Fawadleh highlighted the fear among his congregation members, who are reluctant to harvest their olive groves because of threats from Israeli settlers. One parishioner reportedly expressed despair, saying, “If I have the opportunity to leave, I would leave and not stay in this town, because there is no future for me or my children.”
The Palestinian Christian leaders are also alarmed by the significant financial support provided by Christian Zionist groups to Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Organizations such as Christians United for Israel (CUFI) and Christian Friends of Israeli Communities (CFOIC) actively solicit donations under the belief that supporting Israel aligns with biblical prophecy, potentially hastening the Second Coming of Jesus. As Kimberly Troup, director of the US office for CFOIC, stated, “Being a Christian Zionist means following God’s word as stated in the Bible that He gave the Land of Israel to the Jewish people.”
However, Isaac strongly disputed this perspective, arguing that the idealistic biblical vision ignores the harsh realities on the ground. He described the situation as a “major threat” against Palestinian Christians, stating, “These are Christians who are funding and supporting the major threat on our existence in the land today.” The leaders fear that by backing the expansion of settlements, Christian Zionists are complicit in the ongoing oppression and marginalization of Palestinian Christians, potentially rendering their experiences invisible in the broader narrative.
The disconnect between the biblical interpretations promoted by Christian Zionists and the lived experiences of Palestinian Christians raises profound questions about the nature of faith-based advocacy. The concern is that theology is being weaponized to justify actions that exacerbate the suffering of an innocent people.
