Louisville Pastor Charged with Forgery Over Alleged Deed Theft of Elderly Woman’s Property

In Louisville, a senior pastor faces criminal charges for allegedly forging an elderly woman’s signature to steal her property’s deed. This incident has highlighted the importance of vigilance among homeowners, prompting the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office to recommend the use of “Clerf Alert,” a free automated notification system designed to alert property owners of potentially fraudulent documents.

Court documents indicate that a property on Cedar Street was fraudulently sold to an individual named Cuff. The victim reported to the police that she had not sold her home and that her signature on the deed had been forged. The Jefferson County Clerk’s Office, which processes thousands of property deeds daily, flagged this transaction as suspicious.

Scammers often target properties by using fake identification and forged notary stamps to push fraudulent deeds through the recording process. “They can proceed with that. They can have a fake notary,” explained Ashley Tinius of the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office. “The notary can go on and pass it through as a deed, and then they could attempt to sell your property.”

To combat such schemes, the county clerk’s office is urging property owners to register for “Clerk Alert.” This system serves as an early-warning monitor for property records, alerting registered owners via email or text if a document is recorded under their name. While it does not prevent fraudulent paperwork from being filed, it provides homeowners with the opportunity to act before scammers can sell the property or secure loans against it.

Ashley Tinius emphasized the utility of the system: “It’s a simple tool. You’re able to say, ‘Pump the brakes. That’s not real.’ And then they can stop that from happening.” Despite specialized detection training provided by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, the high volume of daily filings makes it challenging for staff to identify all fraudulent activities.
