Homeless Coalition Breaks Ground on New Shelter Following Substantial Donation from Morgan & Morgan

The Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida is making progress on a new $60 million shelter in downtown Orlando, following a significant financial contribution from the law firm Morgan & Morgan. The project, now named the Morgan & Morgan Center for Women and Families, marks a major step toward addressing housing insecurity in the region. The shelter will be built on the coalition’s existing 5.26-acre complex, adjacent to Inter & Co Stadium in Parramore, and is expected to be completed in Spring 2028.
The coalition had previously raised $50 million toward the project, including $30 million in subsidies from local and federal sources. However, a $10 million gap remained, which Morgan & Morgan helped close with a multi-year donation. Partner Matt Morgan emphasized the firm’s commitment to the community, stating, “Orlando is our home, and when we see the people of this community suffering, we view it as our responsibility to help.” The new shelter aims to provide a dignified environment for families to rebuild their lives.
The six-story, 106,000-square-foot facility will expand the coalition’s capacity to serve women and children. It will replace the former Channel 9 building, which had been retrofitted to shelter 240 women and children over a decade. The new center will include a state-of-the-art kitchen and dining facility, capable of serving approximately 337,000 meals annually. It will also feature an on-site clinic offering medical, dental, and mental-health services, as well as accredited children’s and youth services, day services, and rapid rehousing programs.
Site work has already begun at 18 North Terry Ave., with a formal groundbreaking anticipated as construction activities ramp up. The general contractor, DeAngelis Diamond, and the DeAngelis Diamond Foundation are also contributing financially to the coalition’s mission. TJ Sellers, VP and manager of the company’s Orlando division, expressed pride in being part of the project, noting, “This project is not simply about construction — it’s about transformation.”
Brad Butterstein, President and CEO of the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida, highlighted the need for updated facilities to meet current community needs. “Our current facilities have helped us serve thousands of families, but they were not built for the needs we see today,” he said. The Foundations Project represents a renewed commitment to providing long-term solutions for those experiencing homelessness, reflecting a broader community effort to address the crisis with compassion and practical support.
