Laredo Volunteers Join South Texas Efforts to Assist Flood Victims in Recovery Efforts

In the wake of devastating floods that swept through the Texas Hill Country in July 2026, communities were left grappling with the aftermath. The call for assistance reached Laredo, where members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the Laredo area heeded the call to aid those in need. This compassionate response saw volunteers joining forces with hundreds of others from across South and Central Texas to support families in the arduous task of recovery.

Personal connections fueled the commitment of the Laredo Stake, which comprises five local congregations. Two teams, each consisting of 12 members, were organized to partake in the recovery efforts, working in communities such as Uvalde, Crystal City, and Batesville. Their mission was straightforward yet vital: to show up, work diligently, and provide assistance wherever it was needed most.

The volunteers’ tasks were multifaceted, involving cleaning flood-damaged homes, clearing debris, and removing damaged materials. This groundwork was essential for homeowners to begin the long journey of rebuilding their lives. The Laredo volunteers were integral to a broader initiative orchestrated by local Church leaders in collaboration with emergency management officials. This coordination ensured that efforts were focused on areas where they could have the most significant impact.

The recovery process was daunting. Before any rebuilding could commence, volunteers had to tackle the removal of mud, ruined furniture, damaged flooring, wet drywall, and the extensive debris left by the floodwaters. In Uvalde, the Church volunteers also played a crucial role in distributing food and water to affected families. Over 600 meals were provided, and a substantial shipment of shelf-stable food was delivered to a local food pantry, embodying the spirit of neighborly love as highlighted in Matthew 25:35.

This collective effort exemplified the principle of serving others selflessly, as emphasized in Galatians 6:10: “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.” The volunteers’ dedication not only aided in the physical recovery of the community but also reinforced the importance of compassion and solidarity in times of crisis.
