Nigeria is intensifying its efforts to strengthen food systems and climate action, aiming to drive sustainable development across the nation. During a recent workshop in Abuja, themed “Bringing together stakeholders to advance the alignment between Food Systems Transformation and Climate Action,” Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, Minister of State for the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, emphasized the importance of coordinated action, evidence-based interventions, and shared accountability. These efforts are geared towards building food systems that are inclusive, equitable, and capable of delivering better nutrition, a healthier environment, and improved livelihoods.

Dr. Uzoka-Anite highlighted Nigeria’s strategic positioning to access climate finance through green bonds, carbon markets, and sustainable finance instruments. She underscored the Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on food security, poverty reduction, and climate resilience. Initiatives such as the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones, the Green Imperative Project, and ongoing reforms in fertilizer and input delivery are designed to boost productivity while minimizing environmental degradation.

In his remarks, Hon. Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Aliyu Sabi Abdulahi, addressed the significant impact of climate change on farmlands. He noted that climate change is a critical driver of food insecurity in Nigeria, disproportionately affecting smallholder and large farmers alike. To combat this, his ministry has introduced the National Farmer Soil Health Team and the National Soil Information System. These programs aim to provide farmers with soil-specific or location-specific fertilizer recommendations, thereby promoting the National Oman Agriculture Program.

Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, assured stakeholders of the ministry’s collaboration with other ministries, state governments, development partners, civil societies, and farmer groups. This collaborative approach aligns with the broader goal of integrating food systems transformation with climate action, reflecting a commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement targets.

The dialogue underscored the importance of aligning national efforts with global climate and food security objectives. Dr. Uzoka-Anite assured participants that the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning would continue to provide the necessary coordinating platform and policy direction. The outcomes of this dialogue are expected to be reflected in the successor National Development Plan and in engagements with development partners on climate finance mechanisms.

In the spirit of Matthew 25:35, which calls for feeding the hungry and clothing the naked, these initiatives represent a commitment to practical neighbor-love and stewardship of the earth. By addressing food security and climate resilience, Nigeria is taking steps to ensure that its communities are better nourished, its environment is preserved, and its people are empowered to thrive in a changing world.
