In recent months, Montenegro’s Jewish community has faced increasing hostility linked to tensions surrounding Israel. This shift is evident in the atmosphere surrounding the Jewish Cultural Center under construction in Podgorica, the capital. The center, adorned with a Star of David, symbolizes a longstanding bond between Montenegro and Israel, a relationship commemorated by a monument in Nikšić. This monument honors “Operation Velvetta,” a daring mission in 1948 that delivered Spitfire aircraft to Israel, underscoring a historical alliance.
However, this friendship is now under strain. Rabbi Ari Edelkopf of the Religious Jewish Community of Montenegro notes a rise in antisemitic sentiments, a situation that has worsened since October of the previous year. The community, which numbers fewer than 1,000, now requires 24-hour security due to escalating tensions, including protests and online antisemitic activity.
A recent incident at the Adriatic beach resort of Budva has heightened concerns. A violent altercation occurred between local Montenegrins and Israeli tourists, reportedly escalating after locals recognized the tourists’ origins. The situation began with a personal dispute but quickly turned hostile, with locals reportedly shouting pro-Palestinian slogans.
These events have alarmed both local Jews and Israeli visitors, highlighting the fragile nature of peace and the importance of vigilance and justice. As tensions rise, the community seeks to uphold the values of truth and mercy, echoing the biblical call for peace and neighbor-love as found in Romans 12:18 and Micah 6:8. The completion of the Jewish Cultural Center in Podgorica may offer a beacon of hope and a reminder of the enduring friendship between Montenegro and Israel.
