The Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin, has denied allegations of a cover-up following the arrest of a local priest on charges related to sex crimes. Father Andrew Showers, 37, was apprehended after an undercover operation by local police revealed his alleged attempt to meet with a 14-year-old girl for sexual purposes. He faces charges of attempted child enticement, attempted use of a computer to facilitate a child sex crime, and attempted second-degree sexual assault of a child under 16.
In a separate but related case, 23-year-old Patricia Moriarty filed a police report in January 2024, alleging that Showers sexually assaulted her. Her father, John Moriarty, reported the incident to the diocese shortly thereafter but did not disclose the priest’s identity or provide a copy of the police report. The diocese has stated that it requested these details to take appropriate action, but did not receive a response.
Victims advocacy group Nate’s Mission has criticized the diocese for mishandling the situation, accusing it of failing to act. The diocese, however, has provided a timeline of events, asserting that they were not aware of the priest’s identity in the 2024 case, which would have prompted immediate action had they known. Nate’s Mission has described the diocese’s response as an example of victim-blaming, arguing that the responsibility for the church’s inaction should not fall on the victims.
The advocacy group also highlighted a previous incident in 2021 involving Showers, where he reportedly questioned a middle-school child about sensitive topics during confession. The boy’s parents reported the incident to both the diocese and the police, who concluded that no criminal activity had occurred. Despite these reports, the diocese initially omitted this incident in its response to the recent revelations.
John Moriarty, Patricia’s father, expressed his disappointment with the diocese’s handling of the situation, emphasizing that his daughter deserved protection, as did others who might have been at risk following his report. This case underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in addressing allegations of misconduct, aligning with the biblical call for justice and care for the vulnerable, as seen in Micah 6:8 and Proverbs 31:8-9.
