Pendleton Adventist Church has launched a community-focused initiative, offering free auto care services to those in need. Recognizing the critical role of reliable transportation for families, especially those facing financial challenges, the church has established the Pendleton Auto Care Co-op. This project was inspired by Brendan Griffin, a church member with a background in auto mechanics, who identified the impact of vehicle maintenance on financial stability and access to essential services.
With the support of Serve One More funds from the Upper Columbia Conference, the church has been able to dream big and take meaningful action. The initiative required the church to cover 30% of the project’s total cost, demonstrating a commitment to community service. The arrival of Serve One More funds allowed the church to purchase necessary equipment, and a generous donation of a trailer provided a home for this equipment, effectively doubling the impact of the funds through local contributions.
The Pendleton Auto Care Co-op quickly gained momentum, with church members actively promoting the first free oil change and maintenance event. As community members began to participate, additional needs emerged, such as new tires and transmission repairs. In response, church members successfully raised $2,000 within ten days to address these urgent repairs. This effort exemplifies the spirit of Galatians 6:10, where the focus is on doing good to all, especially to those within the community.
The initiative has not only provided practical assistance but has also fostered a sense of peace and security for families who can now reliably transport themselves to work and medical appointments. The project highlights the joy and energy that arise when a community comes together to serve, reflecting the biblical principle of loving one’s neighbor as oneself (Matthew 25:35).
Pastor Stephen Farr expressed the profound impact of the initiative, noting the excitement and fulfillment experienced by church members as they serve their community.
