In a significant move to address ongoing recovery efforts, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has allocated over $46 million in grants to support communities affected by recent natural disasters. This funding is aimed at enhancing recovery operations for areas impacted by Hurricanes Maria, Irma, and Harvey, as well as the Northern California fires and the historic flooding in Louisiana in 2016.
A substantial portion of these funds, specifically $16.8 million, is directed towards the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico. This allocation builds on UMCOR’s previous commitments, aiming to bolster recovery initiatives in Puerto Rico, which suffered devastating damage from Hurricane Maria in 2017. Bishop Hector Ortiz of the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico has expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from UMCOR and the global United Methodist community. The recent grant approvals also include nearly $3 million in international disaster response grants, with each of the nine grants amounting to approximately $500,000. As UMCOR embarks on the second phase of relief work, the focus remains on addressing the immediate needs of disaster-stricken communities while fostering long-term recovery and resilience.
