The parent of an 8-year-old girl enrolled at Sunrise Christian Academy has filed a lawsuit against the school and a former teacher, alleging sexual abuse and failure to protect the child. The civil petition, filed in Sedgwick County court in August, claims the teacher groomed the student and engaged in inappropriate conduct, while the school neglected its duty to supervise and safeguard minors in its care.

The lawsuit accuses the teacher of using his position to isolate the child and arrange private meetings, including proposing to read to her alone in her bedroom and suggesting they create privacy in her treehouse. The petition alleges the abuse occurred on one or more occasions, including an incident in December 2025 where the child was placed in an intimate position on the teacher’s lap. The petition describes this act as one that no adult entrusted with a child’s care could justify.

A photo of the alleged incident was reportedly sent to the school’s administration, yet the petition claims no meaningful investigation was conducted. The school is also accused of failing to report the suspected abuse to the Kansas Department for Children and Families. The school has not publicly commented on the case, stating it is working with legal counsel.

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office completed an initial review of the allegations in August but has not filed charges. The office typically does not name individuals who have not been formally charged. The case highlights concerns about accountability and the protection of minors within Christian educational institutions.

The lawsuit seeks nearly $250,000 in damages, citing negligence in hiring, training, and supervision. It underscores the need for vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable individuals and ensuring that institutions uphold their responsibility to protect those in their care. The incident raises broader questions about the oversight and ethical standards within religious educational settings.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and the duty to protect the vulnerable. As the legal process unfolds, the focus remains on ensuring justice and care for those affected. The community continues to seek clarity and transparency in addressing such serious allegations.
