Black Mountain Tailgate Market Competes for National Recognition in Farmer’s Market Celebration

The Black Mountain Tailgate Market (BMTM) is striving for national recognition in the America’s Farmer’s Market Celebration, having previously secured the first position in North Carolina and seventh in the nation in 2025. As voting opens for the contest’s 18th year, BMTM is once again seeking community support to improve its standing.

Organized by the American Farmland Trust, the competition ranks the top farmer’s markets in the U.S. by public vote, awarding cash prizes to the top 10. Last year, BMTM received $1,000, which it directed toward the Nourish Appalachia Project. This initiative supports local farmers, food producers, and residents facing food insecurity through the Farm & Food Buyback Initiative. This program purchases surplus produce and pantry staples from local producers and redistributes them to community partners like Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry and Appalachian Community Relief.

This year, BMTM has launched Buncombe County’s only Triple SNAP match, an initiative supported by the Nourish Appalachia Project. This program allows eligible SNAP shoppers to receive up to three times the match on qualifying purchases, enhancing access to healthy, locally produced food and supporting the local food economy.

Jacqueline Smith, director of BMTM, emphasizes that while accolades are appreciated, the organization’s focus remains on using resources and recognition to support the community. By ensuring food reaches those in need and supporting local farmers, BMTM aims to act as a safety net during uncertain times. The organization hopes to build on last year’s success with a top three finish in 2026, furthering its mission of community support and sustainability. This commitment reflects the biblical principle of neighbor-love, as seen in Matthew 25:35, where acts of kindness and support for those in need are valued.
