J. Lanny Wiens, a prominent figure in the mobile home industry and a beloved community member, passed away at the age of 81 on October 23, 2018. Born on January 17, 1937, in Enid, Oklahoma, Lanny grew up in Drummond, Oklahoma. He began his entrepreneurial journey in the early 1960s by starting a mobile home business in Enid, which expanded to include locations in three states. His leadership extended to founding the National Manufactured Housing Association, where he served as president and advocated for the industry before Congress. Lanny also played a pivotal role in establishing the Oklahoma Manufactured Housing Association, leading it for many years.
Lanny’s larger-than-life personality made him a natural leader and a cherished friend. Known for his lively spirit and humor, he had a knack for drawing people into his orbit, whether for an engaging conversation or a hearty laugh. His positive attitude and zest for life made him the life of any gathering. His passion for travel was shared with his wife, Anne, with whom he celebrated a remarkable 60th wedding anniversary on December 14, 2017.
Lanny’s interests were diverse, ranging from his love of cars and long drives to his enjoyment of baseball and his pride in being an OU fan. He was also a proud Mason and Shriner. His love for music was evident in his beautiful singing voice, often showcased in solo performances at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church. Lanny’s dedication to his faith and family was unwavering, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand when needed.
Lanny is survived by his wife, Anne; sons Todd and Guy; daughters Robin and Melanie; brother Terry and Joel; sister Marlene; grandchildren Adrienne, Christopher, Julianna, and Will; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. His family extends their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Tom Merrill and the nursing staff for their care and support. In the spirit of Matthew 25:35, Lanny’s life exemplified the essence of loving one’s neighbor through service and compassion.
