Construction has begun on the return of Hilda’s Place, a longstanding shelter for people experiencing homelessness in Evanston, Illinois. This initiative aims to reopen the site as a year-round overnight shelter by late spring 2027. The basement of Lake Street Church, currently serving as a daytime service center, will transform into a new 30-bed overnight shelter for people of all genders. This development is a significant step in addressing the ongoing need for emergency shelter services, which have been unavailable since the pandemic-induced closure.
Hilda’s Place, operating for over 40 years in the basement of Lake Street Church, has been a cornerstone in providing overnight housing for those in need. During the pandemic, the shelter transitioned to a daytime service center under the management of Connections for the Homeless. The reopening of the overnight shelter is a testament to the enduring need for such services, echoing the biblical call to care for the least among us, as highlighted in Matthew 25:35.
The renovation project is supported by over $6.5 million in grant funding, including a $2 million federal grant secured by 9th District U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky in 2023. Additional funding comes from the City of Evanston, an anonymous local philanthropist, and private donors. This collaborative effort underscores the community’s commitment to supporting its most vulnerable members, reflecting the biblical principle of neighbor-love and justice.
As construction progresses, Hilda’s Place will temporarily relocate its drop-in services to the first and second floors of Lake Street Church starting August 10. This transition ensures that the daytime operations continue to support those in need while the basement is being renovated. The completion of this project will restore the basement’s capacity to house overnight guests year-round, reaffirming the community’s dedication to providing essential services.
This initiative not only addresses immediate housing needs but also highlights the broader societal responsibility to care for our neighbors, as emphasized in Isaiah 58:7. The reopening of Hilda’s Place is a hopeful step towards a more compassionate and inclusive community, where the dignity and worth of every individual are recognized and upheld.
