Archdiocese of Chicago Settles Nine Sex Abuse Claims for $5.4 Million

The Archdiocese of Chicago recently reached out-of-court settlements with nine individuals who accused eight priests of sexual abuse, with the total settlements amounting to $5.4 million. These settlements were finalized over the last two weeks, as reported by the attorneys representing the victims.

Marc Pearlman, one of the attorneys, emphasized during a news conference that the settlements serve as validation of the allegations, stating, “Nobody’s paying that kind of money for something that didn’t happen.”

The allegations span several decades, with incidents dating back to the early 1970s and as recently as the late 1990s. The ages of the victims at the time of the alleged abuse ranged from 6 to 14 years old.

Among the accused priests, four—Cepon, Carroll, Sayers, and O’Connor—are not listed on the archdiocese’s list of credibly accused clergy members. Two of the settlements involved allegations against Mayday.

In response, the Archdiocese of Chicago stated that the timing of these settlements aligns with the pattern of claims emerging. They also highlighted their ongoing commitment, noting that they have paid over $400 million to survivors and continue to encourage survivors to come forward, assuring them of dignity and compassion in the process.

The law firms Jeff Anderson & Associates and Pearlman and Anderson, representing the victims, have extensive experience in handling sexual abuse settlements, having represented hundreds of cases over the past 25 years.
