A 13-year-old boy appeared in juvenile court Friday after Milwaukee police said he beat and seriously injured another child at school the previous day.

The incident happened at Ralph H. Metcalfe School, near 33rd and North, at about noon Thursday, Oct. 15. The victim, an 8-year-old, was taken to a hospital. The 13-year-old was arrested.

Prosecutors charged the boy with three counts of felony substantial battery and one count of felony child abuse. They said he beat the younger child as the child walked into an empty classroom to eat lunch at the K-8 school.

Police are investigating the incident as battery. An initial statement from Milwaukee Public Schools said the victim “needed medical assistance after hitting their head on a door frame while trying to enter a classroom and being stopped by another student.” In a later statement to FOX6 News, which had asked the district for clarification Friday, MPS said: “We are working with Milwaukee Police, and as we shared, we are investigating and will take appropriate disciplinary action.”

In a letter sent to Metcalfe School families and staff after the Thursday incident, MPS said paramedics were called and arrived to care for the student. The district said it cannot provide information about the student’s condition because of federal privacy laws, and that it cannot share details of any disciplinary action taken for the same reason. The letter directed parents whose children needed help after the event to contact the school office at (414) 874-3600.

FOX6 News said it reviewed court information and requested information from the Milwaukee Police Department and Milwaukee Public Schools. (Proverbs 31:8-9)
