A new chapel for Christian communities in Madagascar
The mission of Ankililoaka, located in southwestern Madagascar, operates in a rural area marked by underdevelopment. Run by the Salesian Fathers, the mission has seen a growing number of people embracing the Christian faith. Despite the region’s predominantly animist beliefs and lingering witchcraft practices, the Gospel is reaching more hearts. The community’s need for a dedicated space for worship and prayer has become increasingly evident.
Parish priest Charles Armand Randimbisoa notes that requests for new chapels have risen from villages that have recently converted to Christianity. While only about seven percent of the population identifies as Christian, the Church’s presence is expanding. The Salesian Fathers have long been involved in the area, promoting education through schools and a radio station, with a particular focus on empowering girls, who often face significant disadvantages.
In the village of Morafeno, one of the 18 mission branches, a small chapel was constructed using traditional materials. However, in 2022, a cyclone severely damaged the structure. Despite the risks of collapse and the limited space, the faithful continued to gather for worship. The community faced immense challenges in rebuilding, as poverty made the task nearly impossible.
With the support of many benefactors, the community managed to raise 14,000 euros to begin the reconstruction. The faithful played an active role, transporting materials for thirteen kilometers on foot and with trucks. The effort reflects a deep commitment to their faith and the importance of a physical space for worship and community.
The newly rebuilt chapel is described as a place of joy and spiritual growth. “With a heart full of joy the faithful contemplate this beautiful church, more spacious than the previous one,” the priest explains, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the project. This new structure symbolizes the community’s resilience and the growing presence of the Church in the region.
The project highlights the Church’s role in both spiritual and practical support. As the Gospel spreads, the need for stable, accessible places of worship becomes more urgent. The chapel serves not only as a center for prayer but also as a symbol of hope and community strength. The story of Morafeno’s chapel reflects the broader mission of the Salesian Fathers to serve and uplift those in need.
