Anglican Church in Virginia Delayed Investigation of Former Youth Pastor’s Alleged Sexual Abuse for 16 Years

A prominent Anglican church in Virginia, The Falls Church Anglican (TFCA), delayed investigating allegations of sexual abuse by a former youth pastor for 16 years, according to a third-party investigation by law firm Isler Dare. The investigation revealed that Jeffrey T. Taylor, a former youth director at TFCA from 1990-1999, was accused of sexually abusing three boys, two of whom were 13 years old. Despite these serious allegations, it was not until September 2023 that the church initiated an investigation, following complaints from parents to a bishop about the church’s lack of response.

The first allegations surfaced in 2007 when one of Taylor’s victims approached the church. However, it wasn’t until 2021 that the parents of another victim came forward, following the tragic death of their son due to an alcohol addiction reportedly linked to Taylor’s abuse. The church’s response to these allegations was criticized for its delay and lack of action.

The Falls Church Anglican, a historic church attended by figures such as President George Washington and former Vice President Mike Pence, disaffiliated from The Episcopal Church in 2006 and joined the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). This denomination has faced its own challenges with abuse scandals.

The investigation by Isler Dare highlighted that Taylor engaged in both “covert” and “overt” abuse, including grooming activities and specific sexual touch. The report noted that when the first victim disclosed the abuse in 2007, the then-reverend John Yates informed Taylor’s new employer, a step that was commended by the investigator. However, after Yates retired in 2019, subsequent church leadership failed to act on further allegations.

In response to the church’s inaction, the parents of the victims sought intervention from Chris Warner, the new Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic bishop, leading to the investigation. This situation underscores the importance of accountability and justice, aligning with the biblical call to “seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). The church’s delayed response highlights the critical need for timely and decisive action in addressing such serious allegations, ensuring the protection and care for victims, as emphasized in Proverbs 31:8-9.
