The Archbishop of Sydney has publicly endorsed a legislative initiative aimed at preventing sex-selective abortions, emphasizing the importance of unity in Parliament on this issue. In a letter to Premier Chris Minns and Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council, Penny Sharpe, the Archbishop expressed support for a bill set to be introduced soon, which seeks to address the disproportionate targeting of unborn girls through such procedures.

The Anglican Church in Sydney has historically opposed legislation that expands access to abortion, viewing the act as involving the loss of defenceless human life. The Church affirms that while it grieves for mothers facing difficult circumstances, it upholds the belief in God’s boundless mercy and goodness.

The Archbishop stressed that the proposed bill should transcend broader abortion debates, focusing instead on the urgent need to combat sex-selective abortion, which disproportionately affects unborn girls. A recent study by Edith Cowan University and Curtin University highlighted the prevalence of this practice in New South Wales, underscoring the necessity of legislative action.

In his letter, the Archbishop urged the government to recognize the bill as a step toward safeguarding the dignity and equality of girl children. He noted that sex-selective abortion reflects entrenched cultural prejudice and outdated discriminatory practices that modern societies aim to overcome. The Archbishop emphasized that this issue is not about empowering women, but about upholding the inherent value of all human life.

For Christians, the concern over sex-selective abortion is rooted in the belief that both men and women are created in the image of God, as stated in Genesis 1:27. This conviction supports the Church’s commitment to the dignity of every individual, regardless of gender.

The Archbishop called on Sydney Anglicans to join him in prayer, seeking the government’s leadership in supporting the bill. He urged Parliament to take this small but significant step toward protecting the rights and dignity of all children.
