The Archdiocese of New York has reached a settlement of more than $800 million with hundreds of victims of sexual abuse by clergy. The agreement, set to be formally signed in early November, concludes years of negotiations with legal representatives of the plaintiffs. This development comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the American Catholic Church, which has faced significant challenges related to sexual abuse scandals since the early 2000s.

Archbishop Ronald Hicks, who was appointed last year by Pope Leo XIV, expressed hope that the settlement would contribute to “some measure of healing and reconciliation” for the victim-survivors. In an email to his priests, Hicks noted that the archdiocese will now be able to refocus on its mission of preaching the Gospel, healing the sick, caring for the poor and needy, welcoming the stranger, and educating children.

According to The New York Times, which first reported the settlement, approximately 1,300 victims will receive at least $250,000 each, with some receiving additional compensation based on the severity of their abuse. The Archdiocese of New York, which serves Manhattan, Staten Island, the Bronx, and several northern counties, has committed to using the settlement to advance its pastoral and charitable work.

Hicks succeeded Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who had previously announced the establishment of a $300 million fund to address claims of sexual abuse. Dolan’s tenure was marked by efforts to address the legacy of abuse and cover-up within the church.

Investigations in the 2000s revealed widespread sexual abuse by Catholic priests in the United States, with thousands of children affected over several decades. Church leaders were often implicated in covering up these cases or transferring abusive priests rather than reporting them to civil authorities. The settlement represents a significant step toward addressing the harm caused by these actions.
