Basel Authorities Block “Death to Zionism” Protest Citing Violence Concerns, Police Say

In a recent development, a planned protest in Basel, Switzerland, organized by the anti-Israel group ‘basel4palestine,’ was denied approval by local authorities. The protest, scheduled for Saturday, was to be held at Theaterplatz Square, a location significant for being the site of the First Zionist Congress in 1897. This congress, convened by Theodor Herzl, laid the organizational foundations of the Zionist movement and adopted the “Basel Program.”

The protest, titled “Death to Zionism,” was denied due to the organizers’ failure to submit a permit request and the authorities’ concerns over the event’s potential to incite violence. The Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) had previously issued warnings about the protest, highlighting the group’s history of promoting anti-Zionist sentiments.

In a statement, the Basel police emphasized that while freedom of expression and assembly are protected, these rights do not extend to inciting violence. The police noted that the explicit calls for violence in the protest’s promotional materials reached the limits of acceptable political expression. The police also assured the Jewish community in Basel of their safety, stating that preparations were underway to manage any potential demonstrations that might occur. The promotional materials for the protest included slogans such as “Free Palestine” and “Death to Zionism,” along with imagery associated with Hamas propaganda.
