Bishop Ajibodu Urges Leaders to Prioritize Accountability and Justice in Synod Address
Bishop Ajibodu called on leaders to prioritize accountability and justice during his Bishop’s charge at the second session of the fifth synod of the Diocese of Ile-Oluji. The synod, held from July 24 to July 26, 2026, at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Ile-Oluji, focused on the theme “Justice and Righteousness: Social Responsibility and God’s Concern for the Marginalised,” inspired by Amos 5:24.
The Right Reverend Dr. Abel Oluyemi Ajibodu emphasized that leaders must act with responsibility and fairness. He highlighted the importance of fair wages, honest scales, accessible healthcare, quality education, and systems that do not oppress the vulnerable. His remarks were part of a broader discussion on the role of the church in addressing social issues.
Bishop Ajibodu warned that worship without justice is ineffective, stating, “Worship without justice is merely noise. Justice without worship turns into activism without a foundation.” He quoted Amos 5:23 to underscore his point, saying, “God says, ‘Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to the melody of your harps.’”
He further stressed that Christ embodies justice and righteousness, urging leaders to align their actions with these principles. The bishop’s message resonated with the synod’s theme, which seeks to integrate social responsibility with spiritual commitment.
The synod’s focus on justice and the marginalized reflects a growing emphasis within the Anglican Communion on addressing systemic inequalities. Bishop Ajibodu’s call for accountability aligns with broader discussions on how religious institutions can contribute to societal well-being.
The Diocese of Ile-Oluji, part of the Anglican Communion, continues to engage in theological and social dialogues that reflect its commitment to both spiritual and communal welfare. The synod’s proceedings highlight the ongoing efforts to balance worship with ethical responsibility.
