Boyertown, Pennsylvania, Church Serves Free Community Meal on Christmas Day
St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boyertown provided a free community meal on Christmas Day, offering 70 meals in its Fellowship Hall and more than 130 takeout meals. The event was open to all in the community and did not require registration. The meal included turkey, ham, potato filling, gravy, vegetables, cranberry sauce, and homemade desserts.
Jen Friz, the church secretary, emphasized that the Christmas Day meal reflected the church’s core values of authentic worship, radical generosity, sacrificial service, and intentional relationships. She noted that the event aimed to create a safe and welcoming environment where people could enjoy a hot meal and fellowship during the celebration of Jesus’ birth.
The family-style meal was preceded by Christmas worship in the sanctuary. Over 60 volunteers helped with decorating the Fellowship Hall, preparing and serving the dinner, making desserts, greeting guests, and cleaning up. Many of the volunteers were from outside the congregation, including a number of youth volunteers.
The meal was particularly meaningful for individuals with health conditions or who are homebound, as takeout meals were delivered to them. Attendees and volunteers expressed gratitude for the opportunity to connect with others and share in the spirit of the season. Many long-time participants appreciated the chance to reunite with familiar faces.
St. John’s also operates a weekly Come to the Table ministry, serving more than 200 free, hot to-go meals every Saturday evening from 4:30 to 5:30. Friz said the church’s ministries are focused on loving God and loving neighbors, and they aim to serve and partner with the community through various outreach efforts.
The church continues to prioritize practical neighbor-love and community support, demonstrating a commitment to mercy and service. For more information or to get involved with volunteer opportunities, visitors can visit the church website at stjohnsboyertown.org.
