Bro. Dale Crawford, Pastor of Athens Holiness Church, Dies at 75
Bro. Dale Crawford, a devoted servant in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, passed away on March 15, 2019, at the age of 75. Born in Pickens, Oklahoma, on December 8, 1943, he was the son of Virgil Odis Crawford and Lillie Corley Crawford. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and four sisters, as well as his wife, Carolyn Toliver Crawford, who died on January 18, 2019. Bro. Crawford’s life was marked by a deep commitment to his faith and community.
A skilled cabinet maker by trade, Bro. Crawford found his true calling in ministry. He served as pastor of the Athens Holiness Church for over two decades, as well as the Tallassee Holiness Church in Tallassee, Alabama, and the Old Center Church in Central, Arkansas. His dedication to his pastoral duties was evident in his long and arduous commute to Tallassee Holiness Church, where he traveled 800 miles one way each weekend for four years. Despite the challenges, he and his family made the journey regularly, often filling their gas tanks to ensure they could make the trip.
In addition to his pastoral work, Bro. Crawford was an accomplished guitarist and served in the United States Army. His life was a testament to service, both in ministry and in the military. He is survived by his children and their spouses, nine grandchildren, a great-grandson, and several extended family members. His legacy continues through the lives he touched and the communities he served.
Services for Bro. Crawford were held on March 19, 2019, at the Athens Holiness Church, where Bro. David Harrison, Bro. Darrell Toliver, and Bro. Brett Crawford officiated. Visitation took place the day before, and interment was at Athens Cemetery. Pallbearers included several of his grandchildren and nieces and nephews, reflecting the strong family bonds he cherished.
The life of Bro. Dale Crawford exemplifies the call to serve others with humility and dedication, a theme echoed in Micah 6:8, which calls for justice, mercy, and humble service. His ministry and personal sacrifices stand as a testament to these values.
