Buffalo Diocese Abuse Survivors to Vote on $362 Million Settlement Plan

In a significant development for the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, nearly 900 survivors of clergy abuse are set to receive ballots to vote on a $362 million settlement. This settlement, which has been in the works for several years, includes contributions of $150 million from the diocese and $176 million from insurance carriers. Bankruptcy Judge Carl Bucki recently finalized an amended settlement in federal court, paving the way for the distribution of ballots to survivors, expected by the end of the week.

Attorney Steve Boyd expressed a sense of relief at the nearing conclusion of this prolonged process. The settlement, which has undergone extensive revisions to meet judicial standards, now provides sufficient information for survivors to make an informed decision. Boyd anticipates a favorable outcome, noting that the settlement has been a long time in the making, spanning over six years.

Michael Whalen, one of the first survivors to publicly share his story in 2018, voiced hope for a swift resolution. Despite the death of the priest who abused him, Whalen sees this settlement as a form of justice, acknowledging that while some perpetrators may not face imprisonment, this resolution brings a measure of closure to his case. Whalen expressed optimism about the settlement’s approval, emphasizing the importance of moving forward.

Survivors will have 60 days to return their ballots once received. A confirmation hearing is scheduled for October to address any objections, followed by another hearing to finalize the settlement. Attorney Boyd anticipates a resolution by 2026, with some payments potentially beginning as early as January. He remains hopeful that the necessary majority of votes will be secured to pass the settlement.

This settlement process, while lengthy, underscores the importance of accountability and justice, resonating with the biblical call for justice and care for the vulnerable, as highlighted in Micah 6:8. The community is encouraged to participate in this crucial decision, contributing to a resolution that seeks to honor truth, mercy, and justice for all affected.
