Camp Shoshanah Celebrates 50th Anniversary as Messianic Jewish Bible Study Center
Camp Shoshanah, a Messianic Jewish retreat and Bible study center, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Located on 830 acres in the Adirondack mountains of northern New York State, the camp is part of Ariel Ministries, a Messianic Jewish outreach organization dedicated to sharing the message of Messiah Jesus with Jewish people and others who seek faith. The campus serves as a venue for conferences, retreats, and intensive Bible study programs.
The camp began as a summer Bible Study School and Family Camp, initially lasting one to three weeks. It was founded by Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum, a prominent figure in Messianic Jewish theology, and other skilled teachers. Today, the program has expanded to an eight-week schedule during July and August, though participants can choose to attend for varying lengths of time. The curriculum includes topics such as Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, the Life of Messiah, Covenants and Dispensations, and The Minor Prophets, with courses offered on a five-year cycle.
Participants from around the world have shared their experiences at Camp Shoshanah. Hans, a visitor from Germany, noted that the camp has enhanced his ability to study the Bible directly, without relying on others’ interpretations. Aviyah, a 12-year-old from Israel, mentioned learning about covenants and dispensations for the first time. Nick, a youth pastor, has attended the camp six times, emphasizing the value of meeting people from diverse backgrounds and gaining insights for his ministry.
Mottel Baleston, who has been involved with the camp since its early years, reflects on its impact. He recalls witnessing two generations of Messianic leaders who studied at Shoshanah, with the first generation including himself and the second now leading congregations globally. Baleston credits Dr. Fruchtenbaum’s influence, noting that students who learned at the camp have gone on to serve in ministry worldwide.
The camp continues to serve as a vital center for Messianic Jewish education and community. Its 50-year history underscores its role in shaping theological understanding and fostering connections among believers. As it looks ahead, Camp Shoshanah remains committed to its mission of sharing the Good News of Messiah Jesus with the Jewish people and all who seek truth.
