Catholic Church Deacon in Maryland Arrested and Charged with Sex Crimes

Kenneth Goedeke, a Catholic deacon and former teacher in Maryland, has been arrested and charged with two counts of sexual solicitation of a minor, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Department. The suspect, 45, was taken into custody after communicating with an undercover detective whom he believed to be a 15-year-old boy. The interaction allegedly led to an attempt to meet at a location for sexual activity with the minor.
The Archdiocese of Baltimore confirmed Goedeke’s service as a deacon and former teacher, noting that he underwent a thorough employment screening before being hired. This included an FBI/CJIS fingerprint criminal history check and a comprehensive background and reference check. The archdiocese stated it was informed of the arrest by law enforcement and emphasized that the charges are not related to any individuals at the parishes or schools where Goedeke served.
Goedeke was ordained as a deacon in 2023 and served at several locations, including St. Patrick Havre de Grace and St. Joan of Arc in Aberdeen, before working at St. Margaret Church in Bel Air starting in 2025. He also previously worked at St. Isaac Jogues Church from 2005 to 2012 and the John Carroll School, a Catholic high school, from 2020 to 2026. The John Carroll School stated that Goedeke was no longer employed by the institution and had no ties to it.
The school expressed concern over the allegations, stating they conflict with its values and mission. It reiterated its commitment to safeguarding students and protecting their well-being. “The safety and well-being of our students remain our top priority,” the statement said.
Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler expressed a mix of anger and gratitude regarding the arrest. He described the situation as deeply troubling, emphasizing the betrayal of trust and the predatory nature of the alleged actions. “I am thankful that our detectives acted decisively, intervening before a child was harmed,” he said.
The case underscores the importance of accountability and vigilance in institutions that serve vulnerable populations.
