The Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRC) is addressing how Calvin University will handle faculty members who have personal disagreements with the denomination’s doctrinal standards, particularly regarding human sexuality. Over 175 delegates are meeting at Redeemer University in Ancaster, Ontario, for the annual synod. The agenda includes multiple overtures proposing changes to the CRC’s approach to gravamens—serious doctrinal disagreements where individuals or leaders differ from the denomination’s teachings.

Since 2022, the CRC has included in its confessional standards a condemnation of homosexual sex, along with adultery, premarital sex, extra-marital sex, polyamory, and pornography. Last year, the denomination clarified that church leaders, including professors at CRC-affiliated institutions, must actively seek resolution of these disagreements and cannot indefinitely hold gravamens. Delegates will now hear how Calvin University intends to navigate these tensions.

Calvin University’s trustees have submitted a 27-page report outlining their plan. The proposal includes an initial three-year onboarding period during which faculty members are not required to sign on to all confessional statements. After this period, they would be expected to align with the denomination’s teachings. The plan also allows for indefinite exceptions after at least six years of service, a standard typically applied to other positions within the CRC.

The debate reflects a long-standing tension within the CRC between confessional adherence and academic freedom. General secretary Zachary King noted that this issue has resurfaced in similar forms throughout the denomination’s history, such as debates over creation and evolution in the 1990s. Other common gravamens include questions about infant baptism and predestination.

King emphasized that while professors do not hold the same authority as ministers, the CRC still expects them to align with the church’s confessions. However, the approach to resolving these tensions has varied over time. The current proposal aims to provide a structured path for faculty to reconcile personal reservations with the denomination’s teachings.

The CRC has long recognized distinctions between seminary professors and those teaching other subjects, yet the denomination remains committed to ensuring that its affiliated institutions uphold its doctrinal standards. The synod’s discussion will determine how the CRC balances these competing priorities in the future.
