Church Leader Charged with Human Trafficking and Child Rape in U.S.

In a recent development, Naason Joaquin Garcia, the leader of the Mexico-based church La Luz del Mundo, has been charged in California with serious offenses, including human trafficking and child rape. Garcia, along with two followers, Susana Medina Oaxaca and Alondra Ocampo, were apprehended upon their arrival at Los Angeles International Airport. The charges, announced by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, allege that Garcia coerced victims into performing sex acts by exploiting their faith, claiming that refusal would be against God.

Garcia, known as “the Apostle” among his followers, faces 26 counts that include human trafficking, production of child pornography, and rape of a minor. These allegations involve three girls and one woman, with incidents reportedly occurring between 2015 and 2018 in Los Angeles County. The church, founded in 1926 by Garcia’s grandfather, has previously faced child sex abuse allegations, though no criminal charges have been filed in Mexico.

The investigation was initiated in 2018 following a tip to the state’s Department of Justice via an online clergy abuse complaint form. “Crimes like those alleged in this complaint have no place in our society. Period,” stated Mr. Becerra. The church’s spokesperson, David Correa, expressed that they were informed of the charges through media reports and categorically denied the accusations, asserting Garcia’s integrity and lawful conduct.
