The City of Austin recently delivered a proclamation during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Peace Family Housing Project, marking a significant step in the community’s efforts to address homelessness and family instability. The project, developed by Peace Lutheran Church in collaboration with HomeAid Austin and the Foundation for the Homeless, aims to provide transitional housing for families in need.

Plans for the Peace Family Housing Project were established in 2021 when the church identified a critical need for support among families facing homelessness, food insecurity, and other forms of instability. The initiative reflects a commitment to serving the community through practical neighbor-love and mercy work.

The groundbreaking ceremony on June 9 brought together representatives from the church, nonprofit partners, and local officials. The facility will include four apartments, capable of housing up to six families for a period of 30 to 90 days. This temporary housing will be accompanied by essential services such as case management, limited financial assistance, and connections to community resources like mental health care.

Monte Osburn, executive director of the Foundation for the Homeless, emphasized the importance of these services in helping families regain stability. “Families struggling with homelessness often face multiple barriers, and this project offers a comprehensive approach to support them,” he said.

Lynne Williams, executive director of HomeAid Austin, noted that the project is only the second of its kind in the region. “In Northwest Austin, shelter for families struggling to stay off the streets has simply not been available anywhere near the schools these children already attend,” she stated. “These four housing units offer a beacon of hope and a helping hand for families in their most difficult moments.”

The event also featured remarks from Austin City Council member Krista Laine, who highlighted the city’s commitment to supporting vulnerable families. The collaboration among churches, nonprofits, and local government exemplifies a collective effort to address pressing social needs with compassion and practical solutions.
