Austin is set to expand its homeless outreach efforts in South Austin, particularly around the I-35/Oltorf area, in anticipation of a new resource hub. The city has allocated an additional $250,000 to Sunrise Community Church’s contract to provide services to homeless individuals and families in this area. This initiative follows the City Council’s authorization on July 23 to enhance outreach and support services.
The new South Austin Housing Navigation Center, located at 2401 S. I-35, is slated to open next year. The city had agreed to purchase the site for over $4 million last fall. The center’s operations will be overseen by an advisory board comprising area residents, individuals with lived experience of homelessness, and service providers, ensuring a collaborative approach to addressing homelessness.
Sunrise Community Church, already managing a navigation center off Menchaca Road, is recommended to operate the new facility. The church’s current contract includes services at homeless encampments citywide, with a new focus on targeted navigation services and outreach in South Austin starting this September, continuing until next October.
This strategic shift to focus on the I-35/Oltorf area is based on feedback from local leaders and the navigation center board, aiming to implement “stabilization strategies” before the new center opens. An Austin Homeless Strategies & Operations spokesperson highlighted that this move is in response to community-identified needs and priorities, emphasizing a commitment to improving residents’ quality of life through collaborative efforts.
The decision to enhance city-sponsored services follows community feedback, including concerns raised by area residents about the new navigation center and the Sunrise contract update. Mayor Kirk Watson noted that his office had engaged closely with neighborhood representatives to address these concerns and acknowledged areas for improvement in the city’s approach.
