In a recent legal development, the D.C. Attorney General’s office has filed a lawsuit against nonprofit founder Allyson Abrams, accusing her of misappropriating over $125,000 in government grant money intended for addiction treatment and counseling services. However, she allegedly failed to make the agreed-upon payments and continued to exercise control over the nonprofit’s financial resources. The lawsuit seeks to enforce the settlement terms, recover the diverted funds, and hold Abrams accountable for her actions.
The Empowerment Justice Center, established in 2017, aimed to provide essential services such as mental health care, housing assistance, and education to disenfranchised communities. Despite receiving over $475,000 in government grants from 2019 through 2025, the center dissolved in 2025. Meanwhile, the Empowerment Liberation Cathedral, founded in 2018, remains active, with Abrams continuing as its leader.
This case highlights the critical need for transparency and ethical governance in organizations that rely on public funding to fulfill their missions.
