DC Baptist Church Launches $30 Million Renovation to Revitalize Historic Sanctuary and Expand Community Services
The National Baptist Memorial Church, a towering landmark on 16th Street Northwest in Washington, D.C., is set for a major transformation. The sanctuary, which has not been in use for many years, is undergoing a $30 million renovation to restore its historic grandeur while incorporating modern amenities. The project aims to revitalize the church and bring a new congregation into its fold.
Rev. Lisa Banks-Williams, pastor of the National Baptist Memorial Church, described the initiative as a “God-sized project.” She expressed amazement at the building’s potential, noting its century-old features such as vaulted tile ceilings and stained-glass windows dedicated to figures of American religious freedom. Despite years of disrepair, the church’s architectural beauty remains evident.
The renovation effort has also involved The District Church, led by pastor Aaron Graham. Graham emphasized that the partnership between the two churches was a result of divine providence. The District Church, which is located just half a block away, has a growing congregation and has joined forces with the National Baptist Memorial Church to restore the historic site.
The 50,000-square-foot church, with a tower overlooking the Columbia Heights neighborhood, is expected to seat around a thousand parishioners once the project is complete. The restoration will retain much of the church’s original turn-of-the-century appearance while adding modern design elements in supporting areas. Rev. Banks-Williams stated the goal is to preserve the sanctuary’s majesty while making it warm and inviting for new visitors.
The revitalized church will operate seven days a week, with the sprawling basement housing a child care program for 150 children. Multipurpose rooms will be available for community use, and an outreach center will provide support to individuals in need. Graham highlighted plans to expand existing ministries, offering assistance with immigration, food, clothing, and housing to those on the streets of the neighborhood.
The collaboration between the National Baptist Memorial Church and The District Church represents a significant effort to serve the community through faith-based initiatives. The project underscores the commitment of these churches to address local needs while honoring their historical and spiritual heritage.
