In a remarkable display of community service, the Discover Life Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sonora hosted a two-day free health clinic from September 16 to 17. The event, aptly named the Life Hope Clinic, brought together over 200 volunteers, including dental, vision, medical, massage therapy, and haircare professionals, to provide essential services to the community. This initiative resulted in approximately $221,000 worth of free services and labor for 259 patients, embodying the spirit of neighbor-love as described in Matthew 25:35.
The clinic was a collaborative effort involving Adventist Health Sonora, the Blue Zones Project Tuolumne County, the Tuolumne County Public Health Department, and numerous individual volunteers. Among the volunteers were Dr. Josh Calder and his assistant Sophia Malta from Precision Family Dentistry, who provided free dental care, and Dr. John Hagele, an ophthalmologist, who offered free eye exams. Additionally, Samantha Winkler from DFine Salon in East Sonora provided complimentary haircare services.
The clinic’s impact was significant, with dental volunteers assisting 136 patients, resulting in 63 fillings, 73 cleanings, 54 tooth extractions, and two root canals. Vision volunteers conducted 128 eye exams, and 125 pairs of prescription glasses were distributed. Medical volunteers performed 25 cardiology exams, 25 electrocardiograms, and provided foot care to 95 patients. The event also featured 61 haircuts and 108 massages, showcasing the diverse range of services offered.
The clinic’s success is reflected in the gratitude expressed by participants like Tim and Susan Burkett, who shared their appreciation for the dental work received. The event not only addressed immediate health needs but also fostered a sense of community and support, resonating with the biblical call to serve one another, as highlighted in Galatians 6:10.
In total, 248 volunteers contributed $140,425 in services and $80,660 in donated labor, culminating in a total value of $221,085 in free health care and other services. This initiative serves as a testament to the church’s commitment to mercy work and outreach, demonstrating the profound impact of practical neighbor-love in action.
