Ethiopian Orthodox Church Condemns Killings in Oromia, Calls for Justice and Protection
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has condemned recent attacks in Oromia Regional State that resulted in the deaths of over 60 people. The Holy Synod expressed profound sorrow over the violence, which it described as “brutal and merciless.” The attacks, which occurred in the Arsi Zone, included the killing of 14 faithful in Gora Silingo and 46 others in Tereta Chole Birbo. Homes were burned, and numerous injuries were reported.
The Church leaders emphasized that the violence violates constitutional rights to religious freedom and life, contradicting both religious principles and natural law. They called for the government to publicly condemn the attacks and uphold the rights of all citizens. The synod also urged authorities to bring perpetrators to justice and ensure legal protections for affected communities.
Catholic bishops in Ethiopia have similarly spoken out against the violence. Weeks prior, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia urged parties involved in armed conflicts to pursue dialogue, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Their call for peace aligns with the Orthodox Church’s demand for justice and protection for the innocent.
The attacks have continued to escalate in the region, with numerous faithful previously killed in the same area. The synod described the violence as “entirely unacceptable under the teachings of any religion” and incompatible with human rights. They stressed that such acts undermine national values of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has long been a pillar of faith and community in Ethiopia. Its leadership, including Patriarch Abune Mathias I, has consistently advocated for the protection of religious minorities and the promotion of interfaith harmony. The recent violence has once again highlighted the urgent need for justice and security for all citizens.
The Church’s statement reflects a broader concern for the safety and dignity of all people, regardless of faith. It calls for an end to the cycle of violence and a commitment to upholding the rule of law. The synod’s appeal underscores the importance of accountability and the protection of human rights, echoing the biblical call to “do justice, and love mercy, and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).
