Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon has been recognized for its outstanding community garden, receiving the top beautification award from the Town & Country Garden Club. The award celebrates the church’s efforts in enhancing the community through its well-maintained landscape, which includes a community vegetable garden and the New Testament Stone Garden.
The community garden at Faith Lutheran Church is not only a place for growing produce but also serves as a hub for community engagement and support. It features an ornamental windmill, a tool shed, and a variety of flowers and garden produce. Steve Conrad, the community garden coordinator, expressed gratitude for the award, acknowledging the collective effort that made it possible. He highlighted the involvement of various community members and organizations, such as Green Teens, a program by the Knox Health Department that engages teenagers in community service and skill-building activities.
Throughout the year, volunteers, including the Green Teens, have contributed significantly to the garden’s success. The program offers teenagers opportunities to learn life skills, including gardening, CPR, and resume writing, while also participating in community service projects. This collaboration has led to the donation of 80 pounds of produce, with hopes to reach 150 pounds by year’s end.
The addition of the share shed has been particularly beneficial, allowing gardeners to share their produce and flowers with others. Susan Bellotti, a dedicated gardener and nominator of the church for the award, praised the improvements made to the garden, especially the new structures that have enhanced its functionality and appeal.
Faith Lutheran Church’s community garden exemplifies the spirit of neighbor-love and service, aligning with the biblical principle of caring for one’s community as seen in Matthew 25:35. Through its efforts, the church not only beautifies its surroundings but also fosters a sense of unity and support among its members and the wider community.
