Father Jeff Wilborn’s Conversion Journey Led to Priesthood Despite Non-Catholic Background
Father Jeff Wilborn’s journey to Catholicism began with a series of life experiences that gradually shaped his spiritual path. While growing up in Aurora, Colorado, as an only child, he had limited exposure to organized religion. He briefly attended Sunday school at a nondenominational church and explored the family Bible, but these early encounters left little lasting impact. His faith was more of a distant presence than a guiding force in his life.
A pivotal moment came when he met a friend who practiced Catholicism. This friend’s consistent witness, particularly the regular attendance at Mass, became a subtle yet influential presence in his life. Though he was not yet open to deeper religious exploration, the friend’s example planted seeds of curiosity and reverence.
Wilborn’s path took an unexpected turn during his teenage years. His dream of attending the Air Force Academy was dashed when his poor eyesight disqualified him. He described this as “the first instance of the Lord tugging at my heart,” though he did not yet fully understand the significance of the experience. At the time, he viewed his eyesight as a personal setback, a “No” from God that he would later come to see as a gift.
By the time he graduated high school, Wilborn had lost interest in formal education and instead focused on his relationship with his girlfriend and his passion for motorcycle racing. His life took a dramatic shift one day when he was involved in a high-speed motorcycle accident. Striking a car at 40 miles per hour, he flipped over the vehicle and landed unhurt 20 feet away. He described the incident as a miracle, believing he had been saved by divine intervention. However, the experience did not immediately lead to a deeper spiritual awakening.
Despite the accident, Wilborn continued to live a life centered on his relationship and his hobbies. He had not yet engaged with the Bible as an adult, and while he acknowledged God’s existence, he did not feel compelled to explore faith further. His life was consumed by personal desires, including the hope of marrying his girlfriend. That hope was abruptly ended when she announced she was leaving, leaving him emotionally devastated.
This loss, though painful, became a turning point in Wilborn’s life. It created a “necessary vacuum” that he would later describe as the moment when God began to call him more clearly. Though the source of his conversion is not fully detailed, his story reflects a journey from spiritual indifference to a deepening faith, guided by a series of life events and the influence of others.
