Fellowship to Family: How God Brings Belonging Through Hannah’s Journey
Hannah’s journey from feeling lonely in college to finding a sense of belonging through InterVarsity illustrates how faith communities can offer family-like support. Growing up in a Christian home in Shanghai, she was active in church and youth group. However, when she moved to the University of California San Diego, she struggled with her faith and felt isolated. As an introvert, she found it challenging to make friends, but eventually joined InterVarsity, which helped her feel more connected.
In New York City, Hannah quickly felt at home with the InterVarsity Graduate chapter. The warm welcome from staff, like Amy, reminded her of her family, helping her feel a sense of belonging she had missed. She began serving on the leadership team, organizing events and meals for international students. Through these experiences, she built friendships and learned to share her faith in a culturally respectful way.
Hannah’s faith also influenced her career path. She discovered that her studies in public health aligned with her beliefs, as she focused on community care and safety. Her experiences in ministry and service have shaped her understanding of how God brings belonging through community and purpose.
