First Christian Church of Emporia, a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), is transitioning to a new location as it marks its 160th anniversary. The church, which has been a fixture in the community for over a century and a half, will hold its final service at its current location on Sunday, April 27, before relocating to the Presbyterian West Campus at 1702 West 15th Ave. The church is inviting members and the public to attend a special celebration titled “A Celebration of Yesterday and Tomorrow” on that day, featuring worship at 10:40 a.m. and a covered dish dinner in the fellowship hall.

Founded in 1856, First Christian Church has occupied several locations throughout its history. The congregation’s first meetings were held in the home of Solomon G. Brown, just south of what would become the southern boundary of Emporia. In 1857, the church began fundraising for a new building, and on June 9, 1859, the foundation was laid at the southeast corner of Seventh Ave. and Exchange St. The small, white frame building was dedicated on October 2, 1859.

As the congregation grew, so did the need for more space. In 1884, the church built a new brick structure on the same site, dedicating it on May 11 of that year. The church continued to expand, and in 1904, construction began on a new building two blocks away at the northwest corner of Seventh Ave. and Market St. This fourth home was also brick and featured a distinctive circular center with towers on each side.

Emporia’s growth mirrored the church’s expansion. In 1956, the congregation began construction on a new building at Twelfth Ave. and Market St., which was dedicated on November 1, 1957. The sanctuary at this location was recently sold to Emporia State University, marking the end of an era for the church.

Throughout its history, First Christian Church has maintained a tradition of preserving its heritage. Members have prepared displays of documents, photos, and memorabilia for viewing during the celebration on April 27. These items, including old Emporia Gazette articles and plaques from past anniversaries, offer a glimpse into the church’s rich history and its enduring presence in the community.

The church’s relocation reflects both its commitment to growth and its reverence for the past. As it moves forward, First Christian Church continues to honor its legacy while embracing new opportunities for ministry and service. The transition underscores the congregation’s dedication to adapting to the needs of its community while remaining rooted in its foundational values.
