Former “American Idol” Contestant Charged in Wife’s Murder Trial: Mistress Testifies on Alleged Affair and Text Messages

The trial of Caleb Flynn, a former “American Idol” contestant and music pastor, resumed with the testimony of his alleged mistress, Alleigha Botner. Botner, 24, discussed over 100,000 text messages exchanged with Flynn, 40, prior to the death of Flynn’s wife, Ashley Flynn, in February. Prosecutors allege Flynn shot his wife in the back of the head while she was asleep and staged the scene to resemble a break-in, claiming an intruder was responsible. Flynn has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, tampering with evidence, and intimidating a witness.

Botner detailed an 18-month affair with Flynn, whom she met while interning at his church. She admitted to initially lying to the FBI and explained the loss of her phone and work laptop shortly before Ashley Flynn’s death. Botner expressed hatred for Flynn during her testimony, highlighting his alleged animosity towards his wife. In one text from August 2025, Flynn reportedly mentioned staying up late contemplating ways to divorce his wife without going to jail, to which Botner suggested divorce as an alternative to violence.

Initially, Botner did not believe Flynn was responsible for his wife’s death, but after further reflection and a tip from her aunt, she changed her stance, citing the circumstances as too coincidental. Despite this, she acknowledged Flynn’s affectionate messages to his wife, causing her to question the extent of Flynn’s alleged animosity.
