A former youth pastor in Lubbock, Texas, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison following a guilty plea to two counts of child sexual assault and bigamy. The case, which has drawn significant attention, highlights the importance of accountability and justice within religious institutions.

Luke Cunningham, who served as a youth pastor at Turning Point in Lubbock from 2016 to 2020, was arrested in June 2024 in Shallowater, Texas. Initially, he faced charges of aggravated sexual assault and aggravated sexual assault of a child. The Lubbock County District Attorney’s office confirmed 16 separate incidents involving two victims from September to December 2018. Both victims were under the age of 17 at the time of the alleged assaults.

Court documents revealed that the allegations against Cunningham date back to 2013, with one instance involving the use of his hands as a “deadly” weapon during an assault. Cunningham was also associated with Lakeside Baptist Church in Granbury prior to his arrest.

In accordance with the principles of justice, Cunningham has been sentenced to 40 years in prison and must adhere to a lifetime protective order. He is also required to register as a sex offender for life. For his time already served, he has been credited with 650 days in jail.

This case underscores the need for vigilance and accountability within religious communities, reminding us of the biblical call to uphold justice and care for the vulnerable, as emphasized in Micah 6:8 and Proverbs 31:8-9.
