In a recent federal court decision, Adrian Derrell Davis, a former pastor, has been sentenced to five years in prison for embezzling over $400,000 from his church, a case that underscores the importance of accountability and justice within religious communities. Davis, 42, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and filing a false tax return, acknowledging his misuse of funds intended for church purposes.
Davis held a position of trust at All Nations Worship Assembly (ANWA), where he was employed as a marketing consultant. While he was authorized to receive a salary and a parsonage, court records indicate that he diverted these funds for personal expenses, including the purchase of vehicles and entertainment, as well as paying off personal debts. His actions included buying a 2016 GMC Yukon for $45,982 and spending over $35,000 on unauthorized retail items.
The misuse of church funds extended to personal benefits, such as using more than $24,000 of ANWA funds for a mortgage on his mother’s home and transferring funds to pay off personal credit card debts, including a significant amount to American Express. These actions violated the trust placed in him by the congregation and the church’s governing board.
In addition to the embezzlement charges, Davis was found to have filed a false tax return in March 2021, underreporting his income by concealing the full extent of his embezzled funds. As part of his plea agreement, Davis has agreed to pay nearly $550,000 in restitution, with the majority going to ANWA and a portion to the IRS.
U.S. Attorney Prim F.
