A former priest, Gregory Allen Madeya, was arrested in Vero Beach, Florida, on August 14, following allegations of embezzling over $740,000 from multiple churches, his Catholic community, and his mother. The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General charged Madeya, 69, with several offenses, including felony dealing in proceeds of unlawful activities, theft by failure to make required disposition of funds, theft by unlawful taking, financial exploitation of an older adult or care-dependent person, and access device fraud.
The alleged thefts began in 2018 and were uncovered through a multiyear investigation. Madeya is accused of misappropriating nearly $320,000 obtained from church-related entities and the Knights of Columbus, Pennsylvania’s branch of the world’s largest Catholic men’s fraternal service organization. Witnesses from the church community reported missing collections money, fundraising proceeds, donations, rent, and church-related fees that were allegedly never deposited into church accounts.
A jeweler testified that Madeya sold a gold chalice, representing St. John the Baptist, for $19,440, with the belief that the proceeds were intended for the church’s finances. During the same period as the alleged thefts, Madeya reportedly purchased a 2018 Ford Mustang for $35,433 in cash, claiming it was for a man living with him.
Further investigation revealed messages and photos related to narcotics, along with photographs of debit cards and bank documents linked to St. John the Baptist. Church-offering collection envelopes were also found in Madeya’s trash. Authorities allege that Madeya stole over $230,000 from his mother’s investment accounts, failing to pay taxes on accounts worth more than $248,000. It was determined that Madeya exploited his position as his mother’s power of attorney to divert funds meant for her care, leading to her eviction from multiple nursing homes due to non-payment.
