Fort Bend Care Center Expands Services with Planned New Facility
Fort Bend Care Center, a faith-based nonprofit, has grown from a local church ministry into an independent organization dedicated to meeting the long-term needs of the Fort Bend County community. Founded in 2018, the center evolved from a ministry of Fort Bend Community Church, with the goal of providing holistic support through various community development programs.
The organization currently operates from space within the Missouri City church, where volunteers and staff work to offer a wide range of services. These include literacy programs, health care, education, spiritual guidance, and wellness initiatives. Program Director Lily Shih emphasized the center’s mission to build on community strengths through an asset-based approach, aiming to empower individuals and transform their lives.
Volunteers play a crucial role in the center’s operations, with more than 700 contributing their time and skills. One of the center’s notable volunteers, Chang Hzutu, a former chef, has been involved in the food market since its launch in May 2024. This reflects the community-driven nature of the organization, where individuals from diverse backgrounds come together to serve.
The center’s work has been particularly impactful in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which inspired its founding. By focusing on long-term recovery and development, the organization has become a vital resource for many in the area. Vilma Toledo, one of four part-time staff members, began using the center’s services six years ago as an English learner and now helps translate for Spanish-speaking clients, demonstrating the center’s commitment to inclusivity and language support.
Looking ahead, the nonprofit plans to raise $5.6 million to construct a 14,000-square-foot facility on the church’s property. This expansion aims to increase the center’s capacity to serve the community more effectively. President Mei Wong expressed the organization’s vision to build up individuals and transform them into healthy, viable, and gainfully employed members of society.
Through its holistic approach and reliance on community strengths, Fort Bend Care Center exemplifies the biblical principle of caring for others as neighbors. As Matthew 25:35 reminds us, “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat,” the center’s work reflects a deep commitment to mercy, justice, and practical love for those in need.
