Germany Summons Iranian Envoy Over Alleged Attack Plots Against Pro-Israel Figures
Germany summoned Iran’s ambassador on Monday, accusing Tehran of planning assassination attempts against pro-Israel figures and condemning the alleged plots in the strongest possible terms. The Foreign Ministry stated on social media that the ambassador was called to the ministry, emphasizing that “we do not tolerate attacks on Jewish life and on those who defend it—anywhere, and certainly not in Germany.”
Berlin said it is taking active steps to counter such threats, noting that it had previously succeeded in pushing for “the masterminds of Iranian assassination attempts worldwide” and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to be placed on the EU terror list. The move reflects ongoing diplomatic tensions over Iran’s alleged involvement in attacks against Jewish and pro-Israel individuals.
The summons followed last week’s sentencing by a Hamburg court of two men in connection with alleged plots targeting Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and Volker Beck, president of the German-Israeli Society. Ali Hassan S., a Danish national, received an 8.5-year prison term, while his Afghan accomplice, Tawab M., was sentenced to 4.5 years.
Prosecutors alleged that Ali Hassan S. received orders from the Quds Force, the foreign operations unit of the IRGC, according to German authorities. This accusation underscores concerns about Iran’s alleged role in orchestrating attacks against Jewish and pro-Israel communities in Germany.
Tehran has previously rejected the allegations of assassination attempts, calling them unfounded claims advanced by its enemies. The Iranian government has consistently denied involvement in such plots, framing the accusations as part of a broader campaign to undermine its international standing and justify increased sanctions.
The incident highlights the complex diplomatic relationship between Germany and Iran, marked by mutual accusations and a history of sanctions and counter-sanctions. Germany’s actions reflect its commitment to protecting Jewish life and upholding the rule of law, even as it navigates the broader geopolitical landscape.
The case also illustrates the challenges faced by individuals and organizations that advocate for Israel in Germany, as they become targets of alleged state-sponsored violence. The legal proceedings against the two men underscore the seriousness with which German authorities are treating these threats.
