The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has initiated a formal investigation into allegations of inappropriate communications with an adult by a clergyman at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Manhattan. According to a letter sent Friday by National Chancellor Bishop Diokleias Nektarios to the cathedral’s Board of Trustees, the probe is being conducted under the Archdiocese’s Clergy Misconduct Policy. Fr. Chrysostom, who is cooperating with investigators, has been placed on leave and will not serve the parish while the matter is pending. The Archdiocese emphasized that no conclusions have been reached and is urging anyone with relevant information to contact the Office of the General Counsel or submit reports anonymously through EthicsPoint.
With prayerful concern for the parish family, the Archdiocese expressed its commitment to fostering parishes that are safe, respectful, and grounded in Christian love and integrity. This commitment is reflected in the maintenance and enforcement of the Clergy Misconduct Policy, which aims to address concerns involving clergy conduct promptly, fairly, and responsibly. The Archdiocese has received allegations concerning Father Chrysostom involving inappropriate communications with an adult individual. Pursuant to the Clergy Misconduct Policy, the Archdiocese has commenced an investigation into these allegations. Father Chrysostom is cooperating with the investigation.
At this stage, the investigation remains ongoing, and no final conclusions have been reached regarding the allegations. The Policy contemplates a thorough investigation that includes providing an opportunity for individuals with potentially relevant information to come forward. Therefore, the Archdiocese is asking that anyone who believes they may have information relevant to this matter contact the Archdiocese. Information may be provided directly to the Office of the General Counsel at [email protected] or submitted anonymously through EthicsPoint via the online reporting system at https://goarch.ethicspoint.coni/ .
The Archdiocese recognizes that news of this nature may be difficult and painful for many members of the parish community. It is calling for continued prayer and support for those affected, while emphasizing the importance of upholding the integrity and safety of the parish. The situation underscores the need for vigilance and accountability within the Church, as well as the responsibility of all members to contribute to a culture of transparency and care.
The Archdiocese’s response reflects a broader commitment to addressing misconduct within its ranks, in line with the biblical call to pursue justice and care for the vulnerable. As Proverbs 18:17 reminds us, “The first to present his case seems right, until another comes forward and questions him.” This principle underscores the importance of thorough and fair investigation, ensuring that all voices are heard and that the truth is pursued with integrity.
