A new documentary series, “Marcial Maciel: the Wolf of God,” released on HBO, delves into the complex history of Marcial Maciel, the founder of the Legion of Christ religious order. The series draws on investigations by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and its partners, highlighting allegations of child sexual abuse and financial misconduct linked to Maciel.

Marcial Maciel Degollado, who rose from a small-town priest in Mexico to establish a highly influential organization within the Catholic Church, is at the center of the series. At its peak, the Legion of Christ had a $650 million annual budget, supported by wealthy patrons, and operated schools and universities across North America and Europe.

For years, rumors suggested that Maciel was sexually abusing boys. Investigations by journalists in Mexico, Spain, Italy, and the U.S. uncovered extensive wrongdoing, including evidence that Maciel was married to two different women and had three biological children, two of whom he also abused. In 2021, the Legion of Christ released a report acknowledging that 170 minors were victims of sexual abuse by 27 priests, with Maciel identified as the abuser of 60 minors.

Financial investigations further revealed Maciel’s hidden schemes. In 2014, journalist Raúl Olmos discovered that Maciel had established offshore companies in Panama, using them to secretly invest in businesses linked to gun manufacturing and pornography. The ICIJ’s Paradise Papers investigation confirmed and expanded on Olmos’s findings, while the 2021 Pandora Papers revealed that nearly $300 million from the Legion of Christ was stashed overseas following a Vatican investigation into the abuse allegations. Additionally, the organization invested millions with a corporate landlord that evicted struggling tenants during the coronavirus pandemic.

The documentary underscores the importance of accountability and transparency, reflecting on the moral and ethical responsibilities of those in positions of power. As Micah 6:8 reminds us, “to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God,” the series calls for a commitment to justice and care for victims, emphasizing the need for repentance and integrity within institutions.
