Interfaith Support Group 18Doors Reduces Staff Amid Funding Crisis

In a challenging financial landscape, 18Doors, a national nonprofit supporting interfaith Jewish families, has significantly reduced its workforce due to unexpected budget constraints. The organization, which previously had 15 staff members, now operates with just four employees, nearly all in executive roles. This reduction followed the departure of CEO Mike Wise, with Ellen Frank and Adam Pollack stepping in as interim leaders.

The nonprofit, which has been instrumental in providing resources and support to interfaith families, faced a severe funding shortfall that led to the layoff of about two-thirds of its staff. Laurie Beijen, a board member, explained that the crisis was exacerbated by a shift in donor priorities towards Israel and antisemitism, leaving 18Doors in a precarious financial position.

Despite these challenges, 18Doors continues to operate a referral service connecting interfaith families and clergy, although at a reduced capacity. The organization had been in the process of developing a strategic plan when the financial issues became critical, leading to a sudden contraction.

The financial difficulties were compounded by a delayed annual gift, which disrupted budget planning and contributed to the crisis. In recent years, 18Doors had managed to raise between $2 to $3 million annually, supported by significant donors such as the Marcus Foundation and Combined Jewish Philanthropies. The organization’s commitment to interfaith inclusion remains steadfast, even as it navigates these financial challenges.

In navigating these trials, 18Doors exemplifies the call to “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8), striving to support interfaith families despite the hurdles. The organization’s resilience in the face of adversity reflects a commitment to fostering understanding and inclusion within the community.
