Israel Orders Closure of British Consulate in East Jerusalem in Response to UK Sanctions on Settlements
Israel has ordered the closure of the British consulate in occupied East Jerusalem as a retaliatory measure following sweeping UK sanctions on goods from illegal settlements. The move comes in response to statements by UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, who described violent Jewish settler activity in the occupied Palestinian West Bank as “ethnic cleansing” carried out with the tacit backing of the Netanyahu government.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced the closure of the consulate and entry bans on several UK MPs, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and other leftwing lawmakers. Sa’ar accused the UK of undermining Israel’s sovereignty and called for foreign activities in East Jerusalem to be conducted through “accepted and agreed channels.”
The consulate in the Sheikh Jarrah area of Jerusalem focuses on Palestinian issues in the occupied territories, including Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem. Israel maintains that East Jerusalem is its undivided capital, asserting, “United Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and is under its full sovereignty.” The Israeli government emphasized that any foreign activity in the area must respect its sovereignty.
In addition to closing the consulate, Israel announced the termination of longstanding British involvement in the training of Palestinian security forces on the West Bank. Britain will also be excluded from the US-led Gaza coordination mission, which is based in Israel. These actions reflect a deepening diplomatic rift between the two nations.
The UK’s sanctions were coordinated with 11 other countries, signaling a broader international response to Israeli settlement activities. The UK has consistently condemned the occupation of the West Bank, describing it as illegal. This escalation marks a new low in the already strained relationship between Israel and the UK, with diplomatic relations reaching rock bottom.
The situation underscores the complex and contentious nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with both sides accusing the other of violating international law and undermining peace efforts. The closure of the consulate and the sanctions highlight the growing tensions and the potential for further deterioration in bilateral relations.
